Could be a bad ground wire. This happened to me on the way to the beach last year. It came apart at the alternator. I thought there were 2 belts at the alternator- 1 for the water pump, 1 for the alt. Also, from experience, make sure the belt is pretty tight. I tightened mine down to what I thought was just enough play- turned out to be way too loose. Car wasn't holding a charge- and it threw the belt off.
Also, make sure your battery terminals and posts are clean. Even if they look clean take one of those post-cleaning tools to it and to the inside of the terminal wires.
If your light still comes on after all this- it could be an early warning sign of Alt failure. Sometimes they go bad without warning, sometimes slower......
