way to say the least. As are the drive belts. Historically this is said to be the result of Saab having used a "bought" Triumph engine initially whose accessory drive was configured for a conventional mounting with belts forward. Whatever the case is this "reversed" set-up is one reason why many lesser mechanics will run and hide when a Saab 900 shows up with problems. The intellectually superior mechanic will see the challenge and rise to the occasion. There is no doubt that the VR replacement is a royal PITA, one might consider a more drastic course of action, as follows. Even the best kept lil' old lady Saab will be subject to the ravages of time concerning rubber parts. This includes alot of cooling system hoses you can hardly see. Having recently changed my head gasket (1990 900S) I've seen what magic you can do once the intake manifold is off the engine. Lo and behold hose after hose is now visible and replacable, the rubber bushings which support the alternator and vacuum hoses become accesible. Belt tensioning is a breeze. It is also a great chance to bond with your new car. This may become important in the future as you are almost garanteed to be completely screwed on any breakdown unless it happens to occur right in front of SWEDECARS shop, which is how should I say....unlikely. So get the Bentley manual and get ready to expand your brain, as you will be your cars only friend in the cold cruel Saab 900 unfriendly world out there...
