In olden days (1965 Chevy pickup and 59 Volvo 544)) there would be a lot of glaze buildup on the cylinder walls....removing the glaze without new rings could drop compression and cause oil burn. Don't know if this happens with modern fuels, oils, and engines. Would make me cautious about letting strong solvents sit in the cylinders of my Saabs...both over the 250K mark. Best to do it right as part of a head rebuild. (Was a common practice at one time to pour a cup of diesel fuel down the carb to burn out carbon buildup!)
