Yes it will lower your car
Yes it will improve your handling
Yes ride will suffer
It's a pretty big job, but doable by DIY, but dangerous if you do not have the tools, especially a spring compressor
Yes, replace your shocks, because you are going to have them off, and you might as well unless they are recent
Yes springs wear out, and there are some reasons to stay away from used
If you are going to go to the effort, put in new springs and new shocks and enjoy the ride and peace of mind.
