Was the GM Takeover of SAAB Positive In The Long Run?

Both of my SAABS ('90 9000S & '84 900S) are pre GM and I especially love the classic 900 look that was lost in 1994. In the mid-90's there was much discussion as to the demise of SAAB due to GM's ownership and influence. Yet I read from the SAAB discussions boards many good reports of later SAABS produced under GM influence. I especially hear good things about later model Aero's and the SAAB 9-5. These models were produced after the troubled mid 90's when there were some obvious growing pains.
I would like to hear some opinions on whether the takeover by GM was a positive thing for SAAB. Was it positive for GM? Also if a buyout was inevitable, was GM the right parent company that SAAB needed? I know that Ford now owns both Volvo and Jaguar, so buyouts of small car companies is not uncommon.
What does the future hold for SAAB? I am interested in seeing how vintage SAAB, classic 900 SAAB, 9000 SAAB owners, N.G. SAAB owners and recent model owners respond to these questions.
