Typically when either the clutch master or slave cylinder dies, the clutch remains engaged, which would make it unable to shift into gear from a stand-still. If you can shift all gears - they click into place with the usual resistance, and the clutch pedal also displays the usual resistance - then the problem would indicate (to me) something after the tranny. An axle tripod bearing popping out from the inner driver cup would certainly give you that symptom. The tripod bearing stripping at the axle spline would do that too. Any of the splined axles along the drive train would do that if stripped, from the clutch shaft, to the primary gears to the tranny, to the final CV joint. That would have made a serious noise though, or you would have experienced a harsh start (popping the clutch from a start, engine reved high) at some point before the final death. If the clutch disc somehow locked in the disengaged position, that would certainly give you the symptom you described. In that case the pressure plate springs would be compressed, with the slave cylinder release bearing pressed fully against the springs. Can the slave cylinder somehow lock in that position? The simplest explanation would be the shift rod coupling nut has loosened. But then the stick would flop all over the place without any resistance. Can you tell anything more about the history and function of the tranny and drive train? Any prior problems that were "fixed" by a mechanic?
