That is part of what's included when I do a regular oil change on a pre 94 900, to check both control arms.
You usually see the crack beginning in the middle of the arm at about 30-40% cracked and then as miles and years are put on the car, the crack slowly opens more and more and when it have reached the area where the control arm is bent around into a U-shape it's what I call 90% cracked and after that, it is no telling when the arm will let go.
Most of the time, the arms break when backing out of the garage or drive way making a sharp backwards turn. That's when the load is as highest on that cracked area.
