I found a paste sealer on my Honda valve cover gasket..

...at the corners and where it curled up around the camshaft cap: A gray, non-hardening sealer, on both inside and outside of the gasket, when I took the old brittle gasket off. I applied instead, on my new Honda gasket, something I thought was about equal, RectorSeal #5, and no leaks there for the several more years I had it. This was after an earlier valve cover gasket install, on a Rabbit, that leaked at just those points, after I used a new VW gasket, everything clean, no sealer.
