...and while not definite, it implies the cylinder is worn, the tumblers are damaged and/or the key is shot. If he said it seemed gummed up and progressively got stickier, I would have assumed dirty residue. I think we need more feedback from 89Rose.
Also, before trying water, WD40, plastic cleaner, etc..., if this is a sticky lock and not a stuck lock, try a hair blower in mid setting (high might melt the plastic). Use it for 4-8 minutes with the console off before twisting the key. Then remove the darned lock and clean it!!! This method avoids water, avoids dissolving plastics, avoids making rust, and allows you to get moving. You can also try using a spare key, heating it until red hot, and letting it sit in the cylinder. Repeat 3 times, then try to turn (with a glove). Use a cheap Ilco key that has no plastic on it or it will burn.
If this is an issue of worn tumblers, then no amount of cleaning will help. I am unsure as to whether anyone sells tumblers, but it would be helpful.
I would change the cylinder or clean it rather than changing the entire ignition mechanism as you will avoid needing the special tool to remove the 3 nuts, you avoid the linkage, and you save money.
