Last I knew, law of gravity was still in force. AND the ignition-starter switch, besides being forwards and above, is inverted, so water would have to flow up not just a bit to get inside it to contacts, but up a couple inches. Any water you pour down the key slot would trickle out and down thru the back corners of a semi-open sheet metal cover that's below the lock. There's a big void under the shifter assembly, then a diaper-like plastic covered insulating-sound deadening pad, and then, off each side, carpet under-padding. The only wires that run through below there are without electrical connections in that area, mostly sealed inside wire loom, all with intact seamless wire insulation on them.
You could probably pour about a pint of water down in without it ever getting onto anything or even penetrating carpet padding enough to be concerned. Maybe more. Even though it's sort of water tight down there, what you might pour in would dissipate pretty quickly (dry, that is).
The water would have no effect on the linkage between lock cylinder and switch.
Oh, by the way, the lock and shifter in my 89 stuck as you describe, but after first dismay I kept shaking it and shaking shifter, and suddenly all was working again. I have since bought a new key from local Saab dealer, about $11. What I was using was from another car.
Still will start with any key or a screwdriver, but now I can lock the doors.
I plan to eventually pull the cylinder, clean everything up, and disassemble lock cylinder and make sure of fit of pins, etc.
