For me this general scenario has worked out the best. Find the cheapest good looking Saab you can, and then be prepared to put $1500-$2000 into it - maybe not all at once, but certainly within the first year. I've done this countless times, from a $500 '86 notchback to a $500 '91 900Tc. Every time it's about the same number - $1500-$2000. It's generally, but not always, DIY dollars so they go farther, but I'm also pretty intense about fixing things.
As others have said, all c900s are old now. Even ones that look really nice will probably need some money spent on them sooner rather than later. In my mind, I'd rather buy something cheap, put a bunch of money into it, and have a known quantity than wait for a running car to leave me stranded somewhere. Besides, with any luck me saving a car otherwise bound for the crusher will leave running cars for people with less time/knowledge/money to have, and more c900s stay on the roads. :)
