I have a 93 900S that was bought because of the auto. Sure a 5sp is the way to go, but for endless commuting, it's not too bad having the 3spd. It is pretty hard on fuel if you kick it and it's slow off the line, but it has surprising accelleration from 60-80 mph in top when needed. One thing I did was put higher profile tyres on than standard and gained a drop of a few hundred rpm at 65mph cruising - down from 3300+ to about 3000.
