Hello everyone, I'm new to 900's and for some reason after 20 years with 240Z's I'm hooked on Saab 900s. I recently picked up an '88 900TC with 121K on it. It's auto, but after reading this board for many hours over the past two weeks I'll swap a 5spd in when the auto gives out.
Anyway, I've been reading my Bentley manual and these threads for a couple weeks, and think I'll be able to handle most anything this car needs (I've dusted off a few old curse words and have them ready for use). I'm replacing all vac lines in the engine compartment, and getting ready to hit the ones around the APC at this time.
One thing I noticed yesterday morning is a leak at the top of the #4 injector. Ordered O-rings from e-euro. When the O-rings arrive tomorrow, should I replace them all, or just the leaky one and leave the others alone? They are not showing any leakage. I noticed the leak after cleaning the intake area and retaping all electrical wiring. I took it out for a test run, and it has idle hunt until it warms up, and is only getting base boost. I'll be doing Justin's 10 step procedure this week for the APC check.
I've already replaced all grommets in the intake and valve cover and the vacuum lines that connect to them. I plan on a coolant flush and replacment of coolant hoses (already have them).
I noticed if I slightly move the vac line to the brake booster I can hear the vacuum leak at the grommet. Does anyone know the part number for that grommet, or will I need to seal it with some gasket stuff? Brakes seem to work fine.
When I got the car, it ran great until I was on the highway for about ten miles, then started acting like it was starved for fuel and would die after choking for a mile. Fuel tank was full, and po said he just had the fuel pump replaced. After a couple episodes of this, when it began to choke I kicked it to neutral, shut it of for an eighth of a mile and coasted, and fired it back up with full power for another 4 or 5 miles until the thing acted starved again (got it home that way). I'm hoping it is the fuel filter, because it still did it when I took it for a test run earlier this week. I'll also be using up the rest of the fuel and changing the fuel filter soon. I ran seafoam through the intake last night and poured the rest into the tank.
I replaced the plugs when I got the car with NKGBCP6ES, which is what the car had in it. I realized after getting the Bentley manual that this model was supposed to have the 7's, so I ordered the iridiums which will arrive tomorrow. The old plugs weren't gapped at all, and were nowhere close to spec. The timing was also near 12 degrees. I gapped the current replacment plugs to 25 and reset the timing to 16 degrees. Also put in new Bougi wires. New expansion tank cap.
I'll be replacing the dist O-ring when I swap the cap and rotor (stupid me, ordered the wrong rotor last time), and will be using JB weld to lock the hall sensor in place. It's loose, and the mounting screw is gone because the mounting tab is broken off, I'll plug the screw hole to keep moisture out of the dist.
I also have new belts and bushings for the alt/ps. Will tackle that swap, too.
So, this is where I'm at right now. I'll always search before I ask questions, and am glad this excellent message board exists. Once again, my two questions:
1. Swap only the leaky injector O-ring, or do them all?
2. What the heck is that grommet part# that holds the vac line to the brake booster?
Thanks guys.
Don
