I have the same thing on the gearbox on my '88 (from an '89). The final drive preload is off. See, when whomever takes the transmission apart they have to either keep the shims (there should be shims) the same or recalibrate it with a dial gauge. I thought I had Dreaded Pinion Whine for the longest time (search my posts on "is this pinion bearing noise or what?") and it turns out to be pre-load.
The big giveaway for me was when mounting slightly smaller diameter tires (195/60 versus the standard 185/65) the noise got a lot quieter.
I'd raise the issue with whoever rebuilt you box, but if you want to live with it, I've lived with this (noise not getting louder, gears still work, no sudden locking up) for three and a half years and over 50,000 miles.
