backman,
You'll only hear a final drive noise, like pinion bearings or carrier bearings, when the final drive is in motion. Of course it's not in motion when it is parked in neutral with the engine running. You most likely have a bad upper chainwheel bearing since the noise is heard while driving. A pilot bearing or throw out bearing can be heard to change or go away when idling as you step on the clutch and release it. Neither of those should be spinning when you are cruising along, foot off clutch. The good news is that the upper chainwheel bearing can be changed without pulling the transmission from the car. It used to be standard procedure to rebuild these units without changing the upper chainwheel bearing but given the years and miles on these guys now I always change them and I have seen some really bad ones. In fact, while that bearing is off, the aluminum arbor on which the upper chainwheel sits should be carefully inspected. When that bearing seizes up, as they sometimes do, it will turn on the arbor and wear down the top of it. Then you have to replace the front tranny case (major bummer). Check one of the parts advertisers on this sit (like Eeuro or Saabsite.com) to see the price on that bearing, part number 87 10 865. Maybe you can get your guy to replace it for the price of the bearing if he's nice. If that bearing is rolling so are the 3 chains and the lower chainwheel which is on the input shaft which spins in 2 opposed tapered bearings and so is the cluster shaft which spins on 2 needle bearings, nothing else is turning when in neutral and standing still. Based on your stethoscope work and my own experience (many, many C900 tranny rebuilds) I think that upper chainwheel is the most likely culprit. You can also do the input shaft bearings without pulling the unit. You can't do the cluster shaft bearings in the car (sensibly, nothing is impossible). If he really knows these trannys he certainly should have dealt with those while doing the rebuild anyway. Good luck.
