I'd be concerned about surface rust developed inside the cylinder walls, so spraying a lubricant in there before cranking wouldn't be a bad idea. Still, if the rust is bad enough, that may damage the rings and walls. Any way to take a look in there with a lighted scope? I know they make tools for such things. Perhaps there is one for rent at a reasonable rate. If I had an engine with evident cylinder wall rust, depending on the severity I'd do one of two things - either remove the cylinder head and manually inspect and then remove as much of the rust as possible before cranking, or I'd hand turn the engine, using very small back and forth motions with plenty of lubricant. Mind you, this is all theoretical since I have no direct experience with your situation.
