is the 83 gearbox in good shape? If so, you can just put that unit in. If the 83 needs some R&R, it may well be less costly to work on that box then you could keep the 85 for spares. Mr Myles is right on about having to reset the differential preload and shimming if you replace the pinion/diff gearset. When this happened to me on my 85 900T, (in 1994) I got a crashed 90 gearbox from a boneyard and rebuilt my 85 internals onto the 90 case and rear end....that was 162K ago. Ironically I'd bought the car in 1993 and the previous owner had had an Aamco "rebuilt" unit put in the car within the last 10K....these days, unless you do it yourself, you have no idea what you are really getting!!
