MM,
Yes the first question is, "How's that '83 gearbox"? You really don't go shopping for a ring and pinion. Those represent about 90% of the value of a rebuildable gearbox. You go shopping for a gearbox with a good ring and pinion and worn bearings. A good rebuildable gearbox is one that needs only bearings, gaskets, seals and maybe a few hard parts like the 1-2 shift fork, synchro balk rings, reverse idler gear and possibly a 5th synchro unit. If this is your first experience with rebuilding a tranny seek the assistance of local (C900 tranny) experts if there are any where you are (and they're willing to help you). Get the Saab service manual on the C900 5 speed. Budget lots of time (have patience). Don't cut corners. Preloading the pinion assembly correctly is very critical and tricky. Which reminds me, crush sleeves are no longer available for pre '88 trannys so you'll have to re-form and re-use the old one if you rebuild that '83 gearbox. You might be better served by getting a rebuilt from Eriksson Industries (in Old Saybrook, Connecticut) or another reliable Saab tranny rebuilder, check their price before you start down any path. Cheers.
