MM,
That's not a bad approach if you have the moxie to do the job twice. One good thing is that on the second go-round it's all clean and the bolts should all unscrew easily. The '84 unit should pop right in without any trouble. I've decided that from now on when I put new trannys in these old cars they are getting a new (rebuilt) steering rack, steering pump and all 3 hoses. I always put good used or new inner drivers in trannys that I rebuild but now I'm also always gonna replace the tripod bearings. The only exceptions would be if I know that one of those parts is relatively new. I take a good hard look at the upper control arm bushings and left motor mount too. I've always replaced the front crank seal, oil pump o'ring, pick up o'ring and turbo return o'ring and gaskets. All of those things are a pain in the a*s to do with the power unit in the car and too often lately I re-tranny a car and then 3 months later I'm shoving a rack in from below and cursing. Prior to mid '86 these cars had small diameter inner drivers, after that the diameter was enlarged so watch for small drivers on either your SPG or the '84 unit you're using. If they had their original drivers and tripods, no problem but that's pretty unlikely in 2006. So make sure that your inner drivers are size matched with the tripod bearings. You might consider finding a good tranny core that's a little newer. There's nothing wrong with the mid '80 units but the '88-'89 units are my favorites because of some improvements. After '89 some of the improvements were misguided (my opinion). Cheers.
