MM,
Well, that's a drag. Sure was hoping that it was just a tripod bearing. Sorry, but you can't fix that tranny without pulling it from the car (perhaps as a carnival trick). The ring gear and differential can be the first thing that comes out when you disassemble theses trannies but the pinion assembly is the very last thing you can remove. The four bolts securing the pinion housing make it appear that it should just draw back out but there is a large nut on the other end of the shaft holding the entire gear stack so no dice. The gears from the '83 should fit into the '85 case but since you must pull the unit from the car there's no point in doing that. You should never swap final drive gears into a different case without going through the setting up process in which you shim to set the pinion offset, side bearing preload and ring gear backlash. Since that's a big deal if you lack the measuring devices and Saab manual (and experience helps) it's always a good idea to avoid having to swap final drive gears like that. The good news is that if your '85 SPG is solid and straight then it's well worth putting a good rebuilt tranny in. I have an '86 SPG that will be getting one as soon as I finish the same job on the '88 convertible. Good luck.
