Had the same problem on my 91' conv. First check coolant level, and purge any air out of the braqss vent valve on the thermostat gooseneck. There's a thermo switch which is in between two hoses and then goes into the gooseneck which holds your thermostat. First of all a thermostat is 4 dollars and should be replaced regardless, its 2 bolts and it comes right off. The thermoswitch between the hoses I believe is an overheat protection switch that won't allow you to clutch in the A/C compressor and put additional load on the engine. But when you push the A/C button a fan should start up, don't remember which one, I think the passenger side. You can jump the thermoswitch and the fan should come on when the engine is cold as this should be closed normally. My friend around the corner has had every type of saab since 1975, and every one up to his 91 SPG he has wired in an additional wire and a small toggle switch he mounts under the footwell which would energize the coolng fans directly. This could save you from changing a head gasket the next time the engine gets hot. Also this happened to me in SC in hot weather last spring and I had the Top down and put the heater on for an additional heat sink. Yeah I sweat my butt off but it kept the engine at a safe operating temp.
