Last night after I got done welding, I sprayed some acid on the repair area to etch the metal. After work this afternoon I slathered on the POR15, which only took half an hour, including removing the wheel/tire on that side. I'll give it another coat later today, since they recommend at least two coats. The theory is that the POR15 will encapsulate the rust and stop it from growing any further. I could have painted the stuff prior to welding, but it would have just burnt off while I was welding < I tried that before and know it's not the correct way to do it.
I thought about cutting/grinding all of the rot out, but access is really limited, even with the access hole that I cut. Sandblasting wasn't considered because of the terrible mess it makes. I guess my main motivation for posting a series of repair pics was to show that it certainly is possible to repair that area. How may 900's over the years have been scrapped for less rot than this one had?
Here's another pic of one I repaired a few years ago for a guy. Seriously, this one should have gone to the scrap yard, but I prolonged its life a few more years.
