Wheel bearing Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Fri, 6 Jul 2007 10:30:17 In Reply to: troubling wheel noise, Jefrino, Fri, 6 Jul 2007 10:23:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It could be the wheel bearing. But don't ignore the obvious, and make sure the lug nuts are tight.
I'd look at the left wheel bearing. Turning left unloads the inside wheel, which would be the left. Turning right loads left wheel up. As a simple check, jack up (and support) the front of the car. Then grab the tire at 6 and 12 O'clock, and try and rock it (front to back - towards and away from the car). It shouldn't rock. Grab it at 3 and 9. There will be some movement due to the steering, but you're looking to feel play before the steering gets involved. As a comparison, check the other wheels the same way.
When you feel a bad wheel bearing this way, you know it.
Another thing to check for would be a warped rotor. Does the problem feel worse on braking? After you've driven for a bit, but without a lot of braking, pull over, and feel the two front wheels. BE VERY CAREFUL - HOT! I usually just hold my hand near the wheel. If one wheel feels a lot hotter than the other, that caliper may be dragging, and you're feeling the warped rotor dragging.
