vvack0matic, I took your excellent advice and started to pull the hub to check its condition. To my shock, I found that the axle nut was tightened on with only a couple ft-lbs of torque (instead of the 250 - 265 ft-lbs specified)! Now here is where it gets really strange; the flange on the axle nut was still peened into the groove on the threaded axle shaft!
After I stopped freaking out, I tightened the axle nut as far as my torque wrench goes (~160 ft-lbs) which moved it about a 1/4 turn further and then jacked up the front end. Not surprisingly, the wheel no longer rocks when I twist it back and forth (or side to side). Am I being overly optimistic to think that my problem is now fixed or could the rocking action (which started abruptly rather than gradually) have more likely been the result of something sinister such as a collapsed wheel bearing (which will keep me from rolling at all now that the nut is on tight)?
