vvack,
It's done all the time without pulling the unit. Work from below, a lift is a big help. Drive out the taper pin and get the shifter shaft out of the way. Dress the shaft a little with a file where the coupling has been so no barbs damage your new seal. The old seal is pretty easy to rip out but safely installing the new seal (squarely) requires a driving sleeve that won't tip. If you can't get your hands on the actual Saab tool but have some old gear box pieces then take a selector shaft and drive out the roll pin(s) and swipe the fork selector finger from that shaft. Place the new seal then slide that borrowed "finger" down against it. Then put a socket or pipe or something on that and it's hammer time. Unlike your socket alone, the "finger" won't tip cause it's a slip fit on the shaft, so it drives the seal squarely in. Avoid the urge to sink it too deep or you'll cause the plastic bushing to grip the shaft too tightly and you can't back the seal out once it's in. Get a good look at (maybe measure) the old seal's depth before you yank it out. It aint a fun job but it would be nuts to pull the unit just to replace that seal. Good luck.
