Yes, the previous two owners used gear oil & BG's MGC. If you're interested, you can read about my cleaning processes in the link of my earlier post.

Current API/ILSAC specs (SM/GF-4) do allow ZDDP, just not to the levels previously allowed. (The JAMA refused to approve ILSAC secs with levels shown to be too low to protect certain drivetrain parts.) The concern comes from the failure of catalytic converters potentially caused by buildup of phosphorous being vaporized out of motor oils. The sad part is that not all ZDDP compounds are formulated equally, but the restrictions are applied equally in lieu of any API/ILSAC verification test processes.

While anti-wear additives are good, they're your last line of defense. (MoS2 is probably a better gear additive than ZDDP, if you're picking an oil that way.) You want a good combination of durable oil AND additives. Synthetic motorcycle oil should be fine, but it's not the most economical way to get what you're looking for. Synthetic oils that are formulated for use in both gasoline and diesel engines will offer better durability and better additives than gasoline only oils, & should be available at a lower cost than motorcycle oils. (I use M1 EP 15W-50 in my shared sump Honda "groovy little motorbike.")

The link below talks about the impact base stocks have on gear wear & operating temperature. A Group IV (PAO) based oil is best, so Mobil 1 & Amsoil are your most readily available choices here. A Group III based oil is next best, & Shell's Rotella T Syn incorporates probably the best Group III chains along with great additives. After that, you're better off with a robust Group II+ based oil like Mobil's Delvac 1300 or Chevron's Delo 400. I've used Delvac 1300 in my Honda with great results, but it was too thick for me on those sub-freezing winter startups.
