I just did this last month... The way to do the exact proceedure (easy) is to do a search and find ARI's (and my) posts. Basically, the V output at the O2 sensor swings from ~.2 to ~.8 back and forth every second when it is operating correctly. WHen the swings, centered around .5 V, are not even -- such as .4 to 1.0 (running rich) you have a problem. If I remember correctly, you have an '88, with the adjustable aluminum AMM. You can turn the AMM potentiometer while reading the O2 Voltage to get it back in the .2 to .8 range (using a Digital Multimeter on the O2 sensor fitting next to the coolant tank). In other words the suggested AMM base resistance setting of 380 Ohms is not magic...it is a suggestion to get your car just to run. ARI's and others posts are much better than this terse description. PS, it was pretty satisfying to watch the O2 voltage change as I turned the AMM potentiometer -- not sure it did much good though...hopefully your case is different.
