Those sleeves, official upholsterer's name "listings" I think, were of a sort of coarse cotton canvas on my leather-seated 89. Where they weren't already worn or torn through by the wire hoop and straight wire, they were so weak they tore like tissue paper. Cotton thread holding leather also pretty weak, was of course torn out most of way around like about every other leather seat 900 I'd seen.
I hand-resewed the seat seams with a Stewart's Speedy Stitcher sewing awl, no picnic, and replaced the sleeves with a knit nylon tough-as-nails fabric I found at a Salvation Army store and couldn't resist buying for a rainy day. And nylon thread. Another time I'd take the pieces to an upholstery shop.
There are actually I recall 7 of those S-hooks holding the springs that pull those wire pieces down into the contours of the seat bottom. I detailed this in a post about 3 years ago about resewing the seats.
I washed the leather in the sink and worked some leather conditioner into the panels from the back, injecting it thru the gauze scrim and foam that covers the back of the leather using a little bottle for oiling tiny parts. Then I worked the conditioner into the wet leather and installed them wet for a good fit. They dried much like original shape instead of all scrunched up and undersized, and have held up well since.
If I did it again I'd use lots more leather conditioner.
I can't imagine pulling the covers with the seat still in the car, especially as seats come out pretty easy.
