Here's my two cents. The wire spring system will allow the seat bottom to sink a little in the area where there is the most weight i.e. where the bum makes contact. As this happens the front lip of the cushion is brought into contact with the thigh bottom. This helps spread the support of your weight and reduces the bum pressure. I recently got a 93 base non turbo. The first thing I did was upgrade the front seats. In my view the base seats have less thigh support. The S and turbo seat bottom foam has a raised area in about the front 6 inches that gives me noticeably more thigh support. The plywood would in my view further reduce the thigh support and concentrate bum pressure. You are very right that previous users weight and methane generation are also significant.
