Pay mechanic to replace wheel bearing or DIY?

1990 16v n/a. When I put new Nokian WR tires on last Fall, I noticed a mild hum on left turns. It gradually got worse over the winter & the r-f tire now has a few wear spots on the outside lugs, spaced about every six or eight lugs apart. (I think these worn spots are adding to the louder noise.) I just swapped over to BFG Tractions for the summer & the noise has now lowered back down to a mild hum again. When I changed the wheels I tried to feel for bearing play but couldn't feel any.
My mechanic drove the car & says the r-f wheel bearing is bad, but not too bad yet. He also says the wear spots are unrelated to the wheel bearing, but doesn't know if it's shocks or bushings or something else. I replaced the shocks with Boge Turbos about 80k mi ago. I've also had it aligned twice since last summer. They said it was in spec both times.
So...
1) My mechanic wants $300 P&L to replace the wheel bearing. While he's there he'll check out all the other suspension-related stuff. If I buy a bearing, I'm not sure I'll be able to tell if anything else is "bad" or not.
2) The c-v joint splines on the spindle are rusted/frozen to the hub. The last person to work on that wheel ended up having to grind the end of the spindle after mushrooming it out with a hammer. I did the same thing on the l-h side last summer & never did get the c-v joint out of the hub.
Is it worth it to pay my mechanic to do the work, deal with the problems & check everything else out? I'll probably spend at least $150 in parts, labor (press out/in bearings at shop) & new tools (maybe closer to $250?), & it'll probably take me an entire day to do what he'll do in two hours.
