Help, pals. Car wants to die. Fuel pump?

Firstly, it wants to die, as in, motor won't start or barely will, then won't stay running.
(Secondly, it wants to die, as in, car seems to want to commit suicide these days, one thing keeps breaking after another.)
The main immediate problem: I think it's the fuel pump not making enough pressure. Who knows what I need for a gauge to measure this? I have a spare banjo bolt I can drill out and tap for a gage; will a gauge made for measuring oil pressure do?
This is an '89 normally aspirated, lots of miles. Motor stopped dead on road like someone flipped a switch on me. Had fuel enough in tank.
Got it towed home, checked with timing light and have good spark. Cracked banjo bolt at end of fuel rail loose and ran fuel pump with a switch I made up, and it sprays fuel out.
But no start, just an occasional cough. If I spray starting fluid into air horn, once it cranks enough to get into the cylinders, it roars to life for a brief spell, then once fluid is used up it dies again.
That tells me it's a lack-of-fuel problem, despite the fuel pump having enough life to spray some gas out at the banjo fitting.
Also, I've had this push button rig on the car for a while to prime the fuel for quicker starts, and with it I can hear the fuel pump, at least in a quiet spot. When you push the button; it kind of grunts, then grunts a little deeper as it gets to pressure, usually. But now tho it's still there I can barely hear it.
So, what do I need for a gauge, and what am I looking for for correct fuel pressure?
Problem is, car's so old and kind of a winter beater with rust, I don't really want to put the bucks into a new pump. (Maybe a local indy has a used one worth trusting? I'll call around.)
