I'm no expert mechanic. But I've bumbled around enough cars long enough to at least do a couple things. and your car is an earlier generation from mine, so things are different.

I think I'd start by suspecting nothing and everything. Fuel pump is darn expensive.

Fuel filter? That could be something. it is in the back, under neath the car. get a Bosch. and be prepared to take a gas bath or get clamps to close off the line. eEuroparts has em for a good price, also check rockauto.com.hould

After that, I think I would start by considering how old the plugs/wires/cap/rotor (points?) are. this is where most age-related issues resolve to...ignition. spraying ether in the hole will light off much easier than with gas, so I'm not sure it points the finger as certainly towards the fuel system. For wires, get factory stuff (eEuroparts seems to have the best price on the Bougicord brand. You can get the NGK plugs locally--I use the iridium version, did it to test and it doesn't make a noticeable difference over the std NGKs but I left them in). Cap/rotor Bosh (rock auto has good prices)

The injection/fuel system works off a pressurized fuel rail. what, 30 psi? 40...check the Bentley (shop manual) for the value, or even 10-20% below that it should still start and run ok, suffer at higher loads maybe. (if you don't have a Bentley shop manual, get one).
