Shocks - Cut away the rubber boot at the top of the shock inside the wheel well. Fasten a set of vise grips around the shaft to keep it from turning. Get a deep well socket, with universal joint, extensions and whatever else is necessary to get to the top shock bolt(s). Undo the bolts. I'd give the bolts a good dousing with PB Blaster or the like prior to doing the job.
Ball Joints - Make sure to have the spacer between the upper control arm and the body. Undo the main ball joint nut - take all the way off, then put back on finger tight (important). Then take the sledge as suggested and bang on the outside of the knuckle - it will jar the taper loose. Then unbolt the two ball joint bolt/nuts that fasten it to the upper control arm. Undo the main ball joint bolt (remember, it was finger tight). If not finger tight, use the same vice grips as above to hold the tapered part from turning.
