I agree with Notnoel. Cut the upper shaft on the shock and pull it through the top. Be forwarned, this can't be done easily with your basic hack saw or reciprocating saw. The steel is hardened and you're likely to go through a pack of blades before you even get through the first shaft (ask me how I know). You can get through them pretty easy with a hand grinder and a steel-cutting blade.
Save yourself a ton of headaches and have some PB blaster, a small propane torch, a large punch, a hammer, and a ball joint removal tool (forky thing) on hand before you start removing the ball joints. They WILL get stuck, the bolts that hold the joint to the control arm MAY be frozen in place (I've even had to drill them out before). Set aside about 5 hours to do this job. If it goes smoothly, you won't need anywhere near that. If it doesn't, that may not even be enough.
