just talking to a saab buddy of mine last night on this. the marking of the pulley is a good start to check. the idea is to put a mark across the pulley and see if the line stays in a single stripe or if it breaks apart, this indicates that the pulley is allowing the two sides to move independently meaning the rubber that holds it together is breaking down.
another thing you can do is spray WD-40 on the belts, one by one, to see if it actually a belt, to see if the squealing stops, but suspect your indy did this already.
Also, look at the angle of the alternator relative to the block, sometimes the bushings on the alternator are worn or worn out and this allows the alternator to angle with the result that the belt pair has a longer and a shorter run. No way to properly adjust the belts then as one will always be tighter and one looser than the other, plus there is odd contact on the side of the pulleys. Have seen this three times and the symptoms you described, squeal on startup and then got better, sounds like what was happening in each of these.
Remember that the alternator/waterpump/crank pulley belts come in *pairs* to make sure they are *exactly* the same length. Always replace them in the matched set, the come either in the same plastic bag or with a band to the pair, even though the other belt may look good. Keep it for an emergency but nothing else. As above, you will not be able to get them tensioned the same and this can lead to the squeal...
How big is the job? You have to take all of the belts off, remove and replace the harmonic balancer, and then replace all of the belts (and most likely should put new ones on at this point). You need the right size socket, a long breaker bar, and depending upon how fast you are... a couple of hours to allow for a beer to soothe the pain from bashing your knuckles...
