I'd say to drain the oil if you have a drain plug, check the magnetic plug. If you don't have drain plug then suction the fluid out and look at it, next two would be to take the exhaust side plate off and see what the bits look like, next would be the housing between the firewall where the shift shaft goes in.
Alternatively, go at it like you were doing a new clutch, then slip the splined shaft bac in without any clutch bits, then see if you can, or can not, turn the splined shaft? spin both wheels forward and see if the shaft turns?
