Then you almost certainly have a clutch problem and that's the first place to look. I think that if you had stripped splines on an axle or CV shaft you'd get serious grinding trying to shift gears with the clutch engaged (but maybe not?). Just expose either the clutch assembly or the end of the clutch shaft (which I think can be done a little quicker and easier by removing the little round cover) and you'll know pretty quickly whether the clutch is working or not. I suppose that under certain circumstances the clutch slave could blow out and jam the clutch in the disengaged position causing the symptoms that you have. That would probably be the result of running with a severely worn clutch assembly. Let us know what you find and good luck.
