Exact same symptoms on my 93 900S MT 182K. Mine was a blown pinion gear bearing. Remanned tranny for me.
Jack up the front end. If both wheels spin, then it's probably a new tranny or drive chain. If they both don't, then it could be the differential. If one doesn't but the other does then it could be a CV joint.
If it's the tranny, order quick, the shop I used said Saab only has seven remanned trannies left. Sounds like the conservation of mechanical soundness across the continuum is at work here - I'm getting mine back tomorrow.
According to another shop I spoke to, these bearings are the first thing to go if you've lost lube. In my case, I had leaks for the last two years. I took it in twice to get the seals replaced but it still leaked. I couldn't get the dipstick plug out because it was too tight so I hadn't checked the fluid levels for a while. My theory is the bearing has been going bad for a while causing the shafts to move enough where the seal wouldn't seal any more. I had no other symptoms though - shifting was fine and I wasn't getting excessive noise from the tranny.
