I really don't feel that Saab gearboxes are extraordinarily weak - I think they are a week point in the car, but their apparent fragility is mostly because the rest of the car is so stout.
Every gearbox I've seen that's actually failed has failed due to poor maintenance or poor usage. Even still, they generally last a good 150,000+ miles, which is pretty darned reasonable for an older gearbox fitted to a performance engine.
Also compounding the issue is the cost of repair. These costs make it prohibitive for people to address problems as they come up - instead folks tend to completely wear a gearbox to uselessness. Point in case, I rebuilt the T-5 transmission in my XR4Ti for $225, and it took four hours to pull it out and put it back in. Similar job on a Saab transmission is eight or ten hours of labor and $800 in parts...
Totally different ballgame, but it's the price of admission for driving one of these cars. Good news is that modern transmission are equally costly to replace, so we don't have to feel quite so taken advantage of. :)
