I have been going to Scanwest for closing in on a decade. Rob has been very good to me, and I have been very happy with the service there (though I am now at the point where the only work they do for me is transmission stuff -- he's built two c900 'boxes for me and one for a friend). Scanwest is basically the top Saab indy in the Seattle area.
Last year, I did the Alcan 5000 (PDF map: http://www.alcan5000.com/pdf/08AlcanRt4.pdf) in an '85 c900t. We got lots of good advice from Rob, who used to stage rally (background here: http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/press/597saabrally1.html). Some of the guys in the shop used to do club rally stuff, too.
Regarding the 4-speed: near Seattle the interstates have 70mph speed limits. The car ('86 turbo'd notchback) screamed on the highway, so I put some taller primaries in -- it's better but now 1st is too tall. My 5-speed '89 is just easier to drive. If you want something a bit taller than stock you can use earlier intermediate gears. Note that 5th is unchanged, so 4th is now closer to 5th.
My 4-speed has the supposedly-extra-strong "chillcast" case; it's got synchros.
The best years for transmissions are supposedly '89-'90. '91-'93 is second choice but the synchros aren't as strong (I believe they made the gears wider at the expense of synchros). But you'll get better info from Rob than a stranger on the web.
Supposedly you can machine a 4-speed box to fit later gearing and pinion housing but I don't have first-hand knowledge.
Finally, if you're building a hi-po trans, I wouldn't skip a LSD. I put a Quaife in the 4-speed (Rob installed it) and it makes me very happy. The winter driving is so good that I'm thinking of putting one in my daily driver, too. More info on diffs (and transmissions) at saab rally .com.
