It funny but a bit tedious to catch you here and there.
1. You'd try a test on an empty road to check if you've got brakes - several braking from say 40 mph. If you can get yourself having no brakes say after 5-6 application then this means you've got no pressure. No pressure means dead accumulator or pump
2. If you really have brakes and light comes on then this means that light fools you. If we go deeper we'll find that light can't do that but the pressure sensor can.
"But if the accumulator was good and the pressure sensor was working correctly (shutting down at 100 atmospheres inside the bomb), then the brake fluid light wouldn't have gone on with only one or two not very hard pedal strokes, no?"
You're still assuming you've got a good pressure accumulator. The clause I quoted tells quite another thing - your accumulator (or P-sensor) is dead. If the pedal becomes hard after the light is on (or just before it) then it's the accumulator. If the light is on and the pedal is 'soft' (and you really can brake) then it's the sensor. The sensor triggers the light at 105 bar of pressure and pump at 140 bars.
Also you could check the level sensor since it triggers the light too but usually they're not giving troubles.
