how to recognise piston wear?

can anyone tell me how to recognise the condition of the pistons when the head is taken off? I fitted a new head gasket but compression stays at 4 bar for each piston, making it only possible to start the car after towing. I took the head off again but I cannot determine real play on the pistons. Is there another way? Also some WD40 was still in the chambers after 10 minutes.
