while others say once a year i would tend to disagree, and the reason being is all-though the oil being used ether synthetic or good motor oil it would be affected very little by just sitting and awaiting for the day the motor starts again. oil, synthetic or regular will not evaporate nor will the condensation that is formed on the inside crankcase from a car sitting for a prolonged time on the grassy hill out back play it wouldnt play any huge roll, being once the car is started the morning dew that gathered inside the motor would burn off within the first 10 miles of driving, but there is something that could potentially destroy your motor from your car just sitting all these days, one thing that seems everyone is over looking, and its the structural integrity of the oil filter. everyone knows oil will not evaporate and 95% of all filters use a cardboard filtering core. which once installed will be subjected to the wonderful wetness of the oil, synthetic or regular which once this happens the filtering cardboard will never dry. all these days the car sits the inside of the filter sit saturated with oil turning the filtering cardboard insert to mush.
to replace the oil once a year is saying this mushy cardboard will stay in-tacked and will not break down sending all its guts through your oil cooler, or other vital parts. not only are we saying it will hold together, we are saying it will continue to filter oil.. with the oil cooler clogged because the oil filter is now nothing more than a hollow can attached to your car your motor will either over heat, or completely burn out your valves being the restriction of oil to the oil feeders. doesn't matter if its synthetic oil or regular being used both will saturate the oil filter, so go ahead wait a year then wounder why your blowing head gaskets with a car that only has 130,000 miles.
now that being said. there are a very few oil filters that use a carbon fiber filtrating insert, which is found only in synthetic oil filters, but this filter cost a bit of money and you will have to look for it, the oil-filters you have to chose from that sit on the shelf of your local auto part store all carry a cardboard insert. personally i use the m1-102 mobile one filter, it has a cardboard insert but of course im not foolish enough to think this filter will last a year. i do an over kill in oil changes.
after a 2 to 3 months ill drop the oil no matter if the cars been driven 10 to 3000 miles. i suppose this filter could last at the most 6 months.
but back to filters. the purolator pure one and the mobile 1 use a rubber band around the filtrating cardboard insert to hold it in place, and this works very well, but these two filters cost more than your average filter like fram or a no name brand which only use a thin line of glue to hold the filter together.
this glue will definitely loose its grip within 2 to 3 months but these filters are garbage filters anyhow, being the company is only interested in turning a profit.. the lest thing on there mind is the well being of your motor.
as the consumer, know what your buying and how its intended to be used.
so your options; save earths resources and gamble the filter will hold together after a year of sitting saturated or insure you will not have a blown head gasket, over heating problems,.. personally i use more than my share of recourse's keeping my saab running: heck i own the energizer bunny, and if i cant afford to do an oil change every 1-3 months perhaps i should buy a scooter.
