I've had to replace the brushes in the motor when they wore down to the point of making intermitant contact, think alternator VR.
You can take the motor off without messing with the wet side where the pump is. there are two screw on the metal can side at 180 degrees from each other. The go completely through the motor side of the pump and screw into the pump side of the unit. The only issue is putting it back together takes a bit of dexterity and patience... Those bolts run between the magnets and keeping them on target is like one of those games with the holes and bearings, follow the path and don't fall in.
But it does mean you don't have to fool with the pipes or pump or any of it.
Also, then you have the motor off, it's a keyed shaft from the motor to the pump, fit something that works into the pump and turn it with your screw driver or whatever works, to make sure it turns freely. I have seen seized pumps that were run without hydrastic fluid... *then* you have to take the pump off and swap it out.
