Sounds like good pressure... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Fri, 8 May 2009 08:25:04 In Reply to: Oil pressure 60psi at idle, Frank Myers, Fri, 8 May 2009 04:47:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Believe me, that was a LOT easier than getting at the pressure relief valve...
The only thing I'd question is the use of the Marvel Mystery Oil. I've never used that stuff, but many of those oil additives tend to thicken the oil and coat things, which is exactly what you do not want when trying to alleviate a stuck hydraulic tappet. It's possible that it got "quieter" because the MMO coated the top of the tappet, cushioning the cam lobe's contact.
Don't worry about the Gunk Engine Flush. I've used it several times on Saab motors, and never pulled the pan (we all know what a hassle that is!). If you're really worried about it, simply change the oil & filter twice (remember to run the intermediate change up to full operating temp before draining) to get 99.44% of the stuff out of the motor. The remaining 0.56% won't hurt anything.
One thing: Is this car a daily driver, or does it tend to sit for a couple weeks or more? If the latter, then the hydraulic tappets draining out is fairly common. You just need to let it idle for a few minutes when starting. Also, use 0W30 or 5W30 or 10W30 in the motor rather than any -W40 or -W50 oils.
