high/hunting idle, stalling, poor acceleration issues

My '90 SPG fires up fine, revs to about 2000 rpms, then stalls. Checked for vacuum leaks, AIC has been cleaned recently (approx. 2 mos. ago), and replaced NTC sensor (old sensor was severely fouled). Replacing the NTC seemed to help a bit, but still have the same basic problem. Tried driving the car a few times but it sputters bad and doesn't accelerate unless you are real easy on the gas. The car idles decently, though high, when warm.
One thing that may be useful to know is that unplugging the AIC made the idle even out completely (at about 800 rpm) and it stayed there even after I plugged the AIC back in. I tried repeating this, but by then the car was warmed up so it didn't have the same result.
I can't gather whether the AIC is faulty. I read somewhere that you can hear it spin by putting a screwdriver up to it and listening through the other end, but it makes no more noise plugged in than it does unplugged. The car is pretty loud, so maybe it's just hard to hear over the engine noise.
I might try cleaning the AIC again, but I have it off and it's still pretty clean and moves freely. Is it just a bad AIC or is it something else?
