Fred,
The laser alignment racks are great. The Saab shop I worked in had one and I did lots of C900 alignments with it. The problem is with the mechanics, not the equipment. There are a lot more laser racks out there than there are guys willing to do a good job on a 17 to 30 year old Saab with rusty control arm fixing bolts and shims that are hard to access on the driver's side. Two important things I learned by using that rack are:
1) C900s don't just go out of alignment, if they aren't crashed or messed with the alignment stays put.
2) You can get the toe in remarkably close (even right on) with a simple homemade fixture and it's cheap and easy.
The nearest rack to me is 50 miles away and I bring spare shims and "help" the mechanic with the job. Driving a car with new tie rod ends 50 miles (100 miles there and back) just to get the toe set would be nuts and that's why I made that tool and do them here. When I have a car that I suspect (or know) needs shimming it goes down the road. I'm just allowing swoody to benefit from my experience.
