Well, that changes my opinion about them somewhat. Where do you live? Is there snow, sand, salt, and gravel? I would like to know, because I am often asked about the Wilwood calipers' ability to withstand the elements. I'm plenty open-minded, so I was just stating what I've found searching SAAB, Volvo, Honda, and VW forums: stories of catastrophic failure.
The old-style calipers can be OK if you know how to cherry-pick the junkyard selection, and have a welder who can build up your sliding-yokes. The clunk is from a loose sliding yoke. As the grooves on the cylinders get worn down, you get your sliding yokes built up with weld. A file cleans everything up nicely after welding so that everything fits just right. They're pretty low-tech so you can do a lot for them with just a stick-welder. Local guys can do this cheaper than you think. I pick up whatever pistons I can find (make sure they aren't rusty, particularly the rod inside), and I keep a box of them and a seal kit on hand in case I need to pop in a homespun rebuilt unit.
