1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I visited the other areas of TSN, and was a bit surprised of the other models that Saab has- and even an actual following! It is puzzling why someone would waste good money on the post 900 models. With all the better cars to purchase, why would someone buy a 9seven? Further, why purchase a car that isn't even a genuine. Why not correctly purchase a Chevy trailblazer?? Why would I buy an imitation 900, when a real one can be restored?
Truth is, I open this great TSN forum- and go straight to the 900 link, then the 99 link, then the 96 link, and finaly the Sonett. What does that mean?
First, I believe that I am in a serious time warp. I think that a 1990 Saab 900 is a recent car! I don't believe that I am driving an old car. For some reason, I believe that the 900 is ageless- that it is never dated. Why is that?
Secondly, the Saab brand became trash when the company phased out the beauty. While I can somewhat understand a 900 person downgrading and buying a 9000 for the increased size, I don't consider the 9000 a Saab at at all. The so called new 900 and all of the other 9 three, and viggen trash is simply imitations- hence poor copies of the original great product.
I don't know precisely what it is about the 900, that will always make it a new car for me. Something about this freaking model that makes it sooo comfortable to drive- that produces my ridiculous close-minded arrogance.
The other day I saw some car with the Saab grille. It appeared that the grille and lights were melted-although they were not. What a piece of garbage I said to myself. I think it was a new 9five- what a disappointment! Can anyone explain why I was so bored as I rode in my brother's 9five turbo? I don't care how fast or smooth it is, for it is still boring. a few years ago, I was a bit taken back to see a puny hatchback with the Saab logo. Later, I asked around, and was told that it is re-badged Subaru imprezza.
I remember when Saab was saab. When a 900 driver would curiously look at another 900 driver-when we would spot a Saab, and accelerate or slow down to close the distance- or when the rear view mirror revealed a beautiful 900 with the tell-tale round windshield coming and subconsciously- the gas pedal would be depressed, as the eye would glance rapidly, or lock on the rearview mirror- and that soft electricity, and excitement entered the soul when it was confirmed that Saab driver indeed was tailing, and indeed two 900s would cut in and out of traffic, with two insane conceited zealots behind the steering wheels.
Yes, I participated in these road rituals in the late 80's and in the 90's. Yes, I was a member of the cult. My two brothers introduced me to the cult, and when I obtained my EMS-I became a full member with full privaleges: and I graduated within the cult when I obtained my fast H engine 1984 Turbo. I graduated further a few later with a convertible.
Gradually, less and less members attended the rituals. Now, it seems the club diminished sharply- just a few members across the states- yet there have not been an unplanned ritual in years. If ever a 900 is seen, the looks from the drivers are curiousity and shock.
I know this is a terrible thing to say for the sake of people jobs, yet sometimes, I wonder if it was best for the company to perish, than to have the brand connected to this sorry state of current, production of crappy, generic rubbish. Have anyone seen the coming 9four? It is a case of bad to worse.
