SI's right. It's all about economics unfortunately. I live in the past too. When I can.
My girlfriend needs a new new car and can't spend a lot of money. She's going to get the Ford Fiesta next week I think. It's getting rave reviews and it looks like a great car mechanically. Funny thing is that it specs out just like my 86' VW GTI . . . with a bit better fuel economy.
But it's really hard to get excited about.
And the problems are aesthetic, NOT mechanical.
Doesn't have the clean lines of a classic, or the solid dash plastic, or the purposeful green glow of VDO gauges. Lot's of misc. plastic and garish wrap around LEDS.
She asked me what I'd buy if I was buying a new car, and I replied, half in jest, "I wouldn't. I'd just get a new bike and ride the subway (we live in New York)."
A new budget priced car today doesn't look like it'll be a ten year car. Or even a five year car, honestly. I'm sure it'll run, but the plastic will start cleaving apart and the ancillaries will break.
I think it has to do with material costs and profit margins, honestly. That and that tastes have devolved to the point where we don't appreciate good aesthetics. Particularly when it comes to cars. Everything reasonably priced except for the VW Golf seems to look like a cross between a Nike basketball shoe and a cartoon spaceship. And the Golf's are pricey these days.
When it comes to retail, I fear change. Have been wearing the same model adidas soccer boots for 15 years. The same goes for my classic Asolo hiking boots. My Bianchi steel bike. My 1992 900 Turbo currently "in storage" in my dad's side yard.
That said, I've got no problem buying a new Macbook Air or a new iPod or a TV.
It's just that when it comes to anything remotely mechanical, shoes included, I don't think the design or the quality's keeping up.
